Art in Grand Rapids

"The American Horse" by Nina Akamy at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park

In the late 1800s, Grand Rapids, Mich., became home to one of the nation’s largest furniture companies. That fueled the city’s reputation as a design and artisan town that still exists today. Grand Rapids has a number of sites that house incredible public art. The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park has more than 160 sculptures on 125 indoor and outdoor acres, including works from Jonathan Borofsky and Dale Chihuly. The Grand Rapids Art Museum houses a Maya Lin sculpture, “Ecliptic,” built in 2001. The nearby town of Saugatuck, called the “Art Coast of Michigan,” has a number of small galleries and studios to explore. And Alexander Calder’s ”La Grande Vitesse,” built in 1969, sits in front of city hall. Plan a tour to see public downtown sculptures.
