WaterFire Continues to Delight Visitors
WaterFire, Rhode Island’s award-winning art installation, is 15 years old this year and still delighting visitors, who return again and again to watch the lighting of 100 bonfires that wind through the three rivers of downtown Providence. Lightings occur on Saturdays during the summer and fall with the final lightings this year scheduled Aug. 28 and Oct. 9.
The lightings add a fragrant wood smoke scent to the area and are synchronized with music from around the world and often accompanied by dance performances. Spectators can experience WaterFire on both land and water with boat and gondola rides available for an additional fee.

“WaterFire was created for the intimacy and spirit of Providence,” says Barnaby Evans, founder and artistic director of WaterFire. “The emotional power and visual spectacle of WaterFire is tremendously moving and captures the vibrancy at the heart of this premiere arts city. Visitors to Providence that encounter WaterFire love the experience and urge all their friends to come see what they are so excited about.”
In celebration of this year’s 15th anniversary, spectators are invited to send stories and memories of their WaterFire experience to my.story@waterfire.org. For more information on WaterFire or Providence, visit waterfire.org or goprovidence.com.
